This Week's Music Around the World-Traditional and Contemporary Music-Nauru

Nauru was a challenge to find resources for.  With a population under 12 000 they are 1/8 the size of Maple Ridge.

Kauw Iud (2:54) (found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3Wwd_umUFU&list=PLw5hQ-ZBMnARh2d209Z_tghxcccwrcv2r&index=6) Nauran songs are often sung in ceremonies and primarily vocal, sometimes with chanting or storytelling.  Here is a description of this piece:

"Kauwe Iud" is a song composed by a Nauruan who lived overseas a long time ago probably during or around WWII or earlier.

In 1995 the Nauru National Choir sang the song at the Civic Centre conference hall with a recording studio setup to capture the moment.

The song sang by the Nauru National Choir was then overlayed by videos of the Chuuk Memorial Service which was held on the 31st of January, 2013. The Chuuk Memorial Monument was built in remembrance of the Nauruans who died in Chuuk during WWII and to those who did not make it back home to Nauru.

Te Bino (8:11) (found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2BKDlEZqvI) Te Bino is a traditional sitting dance.  This video looks like it's probably from Kiribati, which is another nation, but the dance Te Bino is shared across multiple Micronesian nations.
